Dylan is the son of Brian Griffin and Tracy Flannigan, who first appeared in the episode The Former Life of Brian. Brian had left Tracy before Dylan was born, and was not there to experience what it was like to have a son. Dylan was raised as a pot smoking, gambling rebel who liked to torment others. However, when he was abandoned to Brian, Dylan realized (while smoking pot) that they had a very close bond. This completely turned Dylan's life around. Dylan now lives with his mother, even though Brian was against it. He is confirmed to be a recurring character in newer episodes.

Dylan's creation is questioned, due to the fact that he is 13-years-old and Brian is only 7-years-old. Stewie asked this question, only to have Brian tell him to "go on the Internet and rant about it". This is due to the fact many people complain on the site about chronological mistakes.
