  • This was the first episode title to have the name of a character outside of the Griffin family in it.
  • At the end of the episode, Death gives Peter The Complete Boz Scaggs.
  • After Peter takes Death's robe, Death wears a Providence College hooded sweatshirt.
  • When Death is requesting an Entertainment Weekly magazine, he mentions that there is a picture of him sneaking up on Tom Snyder, who wasn't dead when the episode aired. Snyder died on July 29, 2007 in San Francisco from complications of leukemia.
  • Death exclaims that the Griffins' TV is so old that they could get the DuMont network on it. Ironically, FOX grew out of the Metromedia TV stations, which in turn were a successor to DuMont. As such, Clarke Ingram, who maintains a DuMont memorial site, has suggested that Fox is a revival of DuMont. [1]
  • A cutaway shows a scene of Dawson's Creek, showing the character Pacey in bed with teacher Tamara Jacobs.
  • This episode is similar to the "Reaper Madness" segment of The Simpsons "Treehouse of Horror XIV", which aired three years later in 2003. In which, when Homer accidentally kills Death, he has to take up the role. In The Simpsons: The Complete Fifteenth Season DVD "Treehouse of Horror XIV" commentary, The Simpsons showrunner Al Jean mentioned that he was not aware that Family Guy had a similar plotline until after the show had aired.   • As of the episode's initial airing, the FOX Wednesday night schedule had Beverly Hills, 90210 airing at 8 PM opposite Dawson's Creek, and Get Real at 9 PM. Ironically, Norm MacDonald, the voice of Death, had his own show on CBS airing at 8:30, called The Norm Show.
  • Tom Tucker tries to kill Diane Simmons with a chainsaw, but Death turns off the TV before anything happens.
  • This episode marks the first appearance of two recurring characters; Dr. Elmer Hartman, who would be the recurring doctor in the series, and Death who would be played in all his later appearances by Adam Carolla.

  • At the end of Hitler the number to call is "213-DU WERDEST EINE KRANKENSCHWESTER BRAUCHEN." This is a common German threat translating "YOU WILL NEED A NURSE," although "WERDEST" is incorrect and should be "WIRST." It is similar to threats of hospitalization such as "You're going to end up in a hospital." The Number 213 are the same as the number of season and episode; Season 2, Episode 13.
  • The Griffins are seen eating Generic Puffs for breakfast.
  • A scene cutaway shows Jack from Titanic not being able to die.
  • As Peter looks at the cast of Dawson's Creek, the show's theme song "I Don't Want to Wait" by Paula Cole plays.
  • When this episode reran on FOX, Lesly Stahl's line, "...and one of you is hung like an elf", during 60 Minutes After Dark was cut. Uncensored versions of the episode don't have the line edited.
  • When Death flashes back to himself as a teenager in a car with his girlfriend, the car's shaking stops when he realizes that he accidentally killed her. Then, he says that he will be a virgin forever. In the censored versions, the flashback ends there. In the uncensored version, it continues as he says, "Or am I?" which is followed by the car shaking some more.
