[edit] Appearances
Stan Smith is the main character from American Dad, and appears once in Family Guy. He was in Lois Kills Stewie. However, Stan's appearance has been a subject of question, as "Lois Kills Stewie" is considered to be non-canon. Seth MacFarlane and creators have hinted at a possible Family Guy/American Dad mishmash, meaning it may be possible that Stan may find himself married to Lois or a future episode of American Dad! may begin with Peter waking up to find his is a CIA agent. The mishmash concept was already looked at with Roger living with the Griffins at the end of Meet the Quagmires. A more likely probably is a more detailed Family Guy/American Dad! crossover, such as the Griffin family visiting Langley Falls or the Smith family visiting Quahog.
[edit] Basis for appearance
Stan Smith is voiced by Seth MacFarlane, also the voice of Peter. In an interview, MacFarlane said Stan is the most demanding character for either show in way of voice acting, largely due to Stan's deep, confident sounding voice as opposed to Peter's slow, lackadaisical tone of voice. There is some debate among fans of both shows as to which Family Guy character Stan most resembles. While Stan shares some of the foolhardy qualities of Peter, he has less body fat than Peter, and seems to be more athletic. Stan does have the same cleft chin as Quagmire, but none of the personality traits as he has been in an unadulterated monogamous relationship with Francine Smith, his wife. The most often agreed upon characteristic is that Stan is like "Joe with functional legs", due to both characters sharing a devotion to duty in the CIA and Quahog Police, respectively. In fact, in his appearance in "Lois Kills Stewie", Stewie accidentally calls Stan "Joe".
