Star Wars is a film series which is often referenced in Family Guy. The original film, then simply entitled "Star Wars", was released in 1977 by director George Lucas. On the basis of its huge success, Lucas subsequently released two sequels, creating a trilogy.
Star Wars is characterized by - and lampooned for - having a huge fan base, who have an intimate and exact knowledge of the work, and object strenuously to any departure from canon. The fans have developed the story further and attend conventions. Lucas produced three further prequel films, Episodes I - III.
Many Star Wars characters and references are seen throughout all the Family Guy series. With support from Lucas, Seth MacFarlane has created Blue Harvest, a whole Family Guy extended episode which is a retelling of Star Wars Episode IV (the original film from 1977).
Another episode of Family Guy dedicated to Star Wars Episode V: The Empire Strikes Back titled Something, Something, Something Dark Side will be released on DVD and Blu-ray on December 22, 2009. A sneak-peek can be seen on the Blue Harvest DVD.
Yet another episode of Family Guy dedicated to Star Wars Episode VI: Return of the Jedi, originally titled "Episode VI - The Great Muppet Caper" but later renamed We Have A Bad Feeling About This, is currently in production.
