The Courtship of Stewie's Father/References
Family Guy Wiki, your fan-created Family Guy resource.
- The title of this episode is a reference to the Bill Bixby sitcom The Courtship of Eddie's Father.
- Stewie’s life ambition is alleged to be “taking pictures of Madison County, Iowa” (à la The Bridges of Madison County).
- Peter (dressed as Indiana Jones) and Stewie (dressed as Short Round) are chased by a turban-wearing guard named Ahmed through a mineshaft, parodying Indiana Jones and the Temple of Doom. Upon luring the guard away, Michael Eisner tries to rip out Peter’s heart (parodying Mola Ram from Temple of Doom), but falls down a cliff by the Jungle Cruise and is ripped apart by crocodiles.
- Stewie has also been shown as Short Round in Stewie Griffin: The Untold Story.
- Kim Cattrall is made fun of for her age in one cutaway.
- A cutaway shows an alternate version of Back to the Future Part II in which Doctor Emmett Brown is revealed to be a racist.
- When the guard is chasing Peter and Stewie, Peter tries to distract him by saying “Hey, look over there! There’s a woman learning!” This might be a reference to sexist attitudes in some Islamic societies. However the man appears to be wearing a Sikh turban.
- When Peter rescues Stewie from “It’s a Tiny World,” he asks Stewie why he’s dressed like Fred Berry’s character Rerun from the sitcom What's Happening!!
- Herbert (during a dream sequence) sings an almost accurate version of “Somewhere That’s Green” from the movie Little Shop of Horrors. The dream sequence where Herbert imagines an idyllic family life with Chris is an almost dead-on copy of the sequence where Audrey (Ellen Greene) dreams of having a family with Seymour ([Rick Moranis]).
- When Peter’s socially awkward and “burden of the state” supervisor, Opie, is promoted, the evil Decepticon Soundwave (from The Transformers) inherits his job. Soundwave has a wife he met in a Christian chat room, and carries a picture of his family that transforms into a cassette tape. Compared to the episode “When You Wish Upon a Weinstein”, it had previously established Optimus Prime, leader of the opposing Autobots, as Jewish.
- Disney rides:
- There is a ride called the “Disney Stock Slide” the slide is a red line going down a chart marked from $40 to 50¢.
- Peter and Stewie watch Captain EO, and Michael Jackson runs out of the screen and grabs a kid in the audience. There is an error with location, as it appears that Peter and Stewie are at the Magic Kingdom, while Captain EO was shown at EPCOT, another park in the Walt Disney World Resort. However it was shown at the Magic Kingdom-style parks in California, Paris, and Tokyo.
- Stewie is captured by Disney security guards and forced to sing on “It’s a Tiny World,” a parody of “It’s a Small World.”
- Peter and Stewie get on “Halle Berry’s Wild Ride” (a play on Mr. Toad's Wild Ride), where Halle runs over several people and then runs away. This is a parody of Berry’s (multiple) hit and run accidents over the last several years.
- Before Stewie sings “It’s a Tiny World” one of the lost kids says, “If you don’t sing the song you’ll be in a Christmas movie with Tim Allen,” a reference to The Santa Clause movie series and Christmas with the Kranks. Also, the manner in which the child states this suggests a possible reference to a scene in the movie Indiana Jones And The Temple Of Doomin which Indy and Short Round are captured and put in a cage, and another captured child slave states what will happen to them.
- In one scene, Brian parodies “Peanut Butter Jelly Time,” a hit Flash animation short.
- Peter realizes that Stewie has run off whilst they are shopping in a Disney Shop. He spots the Crows from the Disney movie Dumbo sitting in the shop. He asks them if they have seen Stewie. The response: "Well I done seen about everything but I sure no seen your boy no how" in an African dialect. Peter's response is the same: "Ahh, that's good old fashioned family racism."
- A cutaway depicts Cleveland working for E! and speaking to Penélope Cruz. He actually thinks she is Seabiscuit and feeds her a carrot. Cruz tries to tell him who she actually is, but eats the carrot.
- The scene in which Brian dresses up as a banana and starts singing, "It's peanut butter jelly time!" is a reference to a flash cartoon that can be found at http://www.albinoblacksheep.com/flash/banana.php, as well as other places.
- During a cut-away scene Peter is conducting the Sand People Choir. The Sand People are a reference to the Tusken Raiders from the Star Wars movies. The Sand People run away, when Obi-Wan Kenobi enters to say that the Sand People frighten easily but they'll be back and in greater numbers. This specific line is a scene from the movie Star Wars Episode IV: A New Hope
